Shirley Chappell, CEO

I have worked within the learning disability field of nursing since 1985. I qualified as an enrolled nurse in 1987 progressing to a registered nurse in 1993. During my career I worked in a variety of settings, from my early days in an institution to an assortment of community settings. I have been very privileged to work with and support some amazing people of differing abilities. I specialised in supporting people who sometimes present with behaviours that challenge and have completed formal diploma training in applied behavioural analysis. I am a person centred facilitator and believe in truly advocating for people needs and rights. I am a BILD accredited trainer in the safe use of breakaway and physical intervention techniques and an advocate of using positive behaviour support within my work practices.

Alongside my nursing registration I hold the following qualifications:

  • Queens Nurse
  • Diploma in Teaching & Learning for Professional Practice
  • Diploma in Applied Behavioural Analysis
  • Qualified Executive Coach
  • Person Centred Planning Facilitator

My experience over 30 years has given me an invaluable understanding and knowledge into the struggles that people with Learning Disabilities, Autism and Mental Health difficulties face every day of their lives. Supporting people in person centred ways has enabled me to use individual approaches to meet a person’s needs to increase their personal self-determination and increase their own independence, leading to an improved quality of life.

My professional practice ensures the training, assessment and consultancy services I offer are of a high quality, based on years of clinical experience and knowledge.

Alan Brelsford, Director of IT and Communications

I started my career within Learning Disability in 1993 , starting my career as a Nursing Assistant at Calderstones NHS Trust where I supported adults with Learning and Associated Disabilities.

After completing the NVQ 2 in care and NVQ 3 in rehabilitative care I was promoted to the role of Senior Support Worker, gaining clinical experience supporting adults with Acquired Brain Injuries and Autistic Spectrum Conditions.

It was during this period I embarked on my training career and became a BILD accredited trainer teaching a model of breakaway and  physical interventions and working up to Instructor Level.

A part of my role as Instructor was to develop and present physical intervention and conflict management training packages for onsite and community services and to mentor and support students whilst they progressed through the model from student to trainer.

Qualifications and experiences gained during this role are –

  •  Diploma in Positive Behaviour Support
  • Certificate of Education (Post Compulsory)
  • Cognitive Rehabilitation Programmes
  • Maintaining First Aid at Work Certification

In 2015 I retired from full time employment and took part time employment at the Breightmet Centre for Autism where I write and review restraint reduction plans whilst following the sound principles of Positive Behaviour Support, I also deliver Autism Awareness and PBSP training to inductees and established workers.

Mike Hansen, Director of Sales and Marketing

I qualified with a first class bachelor honours degree as a Registered Learning Disability Nurse and Social worker in 2007. Since 2013 I progressed to a specialist forensic role within the Adult Learning Disability team securing robust and specially commissioned community placements for Learning Disabled adults who had previously offended and subsequently been placed in low/med/high secure hospital provision out-of- area.

Alongside my nursing and social work degree I hold the following qualifications:

My experience and knowledge spanning 25 years has enabled me to develop a valuable insight into the difficulties faced by people with Learning Disabilities, Autism and Mental Health & Forensic issues. It has further provided me with first-hand knowledge and experience of the difficulties faced by staff teams, families and provider organisations in a world with competing demands and pressures. This experience and knowledge has fundamentally informed my professional practice and has become a core element in delivering quality training, assessment and consultancy services.
